Masai Culture

Leleshwa Camp is committed to promoting responsible culture travel that connects guest with local people  in a mutually respectful and beneficial manner. A visit to an authentic Masai manyatta is an exciting cultural experience and provides an opportunity to explore their ancient traditional way of life. We have developed a program that will provide you with enriching experiences and will immerse you in the day-to-day traditional way of life of the Masai. Components of the program include:

  • Village visits - an opportunity to observe how their traditions have evolved around their cattle. Our spotter staff will introduce you to their family and welcome you into their homes
  • Household chores - includes daily water and firewood collecting, child care and arts & crafts.
  • Take a walk on the wild side - a nature walk with a herdsman who will teach  you the skills of spear throwing, shooting a bow and arrow, interpreting tracks and general wildlife & environmental awareness.
  • Market days - witness their negotiating skills when bartering cattle for household items.
  • School visits - share the enthusiasm of Mpopongi School's teachers and pupils in a class room setting. Please visit our Social Responsibility page to learn more about the Leleshwa Camp Community Fund
  • Ceremonies - be thrilled by attending a wedding , naming, circumcision or graduation ceremony when available.
