The Leleshwa Camp Community Fund

Leleshwa Camp is Environmentally Responsible. Every guest who stays at Leleshwa Camp does so in the knowledge that they are making a direct contribution towards the upliftment of the Masai Community. These improvements to local lives include infrastructure, health, education and the environment.

Masai Mara National park Community Projects Leleshwa Camp We have created the Leleshwa Camp Community Fund (LCCF) for this purpose and the primary objective is to assist children of the area with attaining literacy to give them a sound grounding for further personal growth and development.

We achieve this by assisting an established school, Mpopongi Primary School, to ensure that the existing facility operates to its maximum potential. We assist the most needy families within the Siana Area whilst promoting gender equality in the school. Children are also taught the value of conservation principles which demonstrates how the community benefits directly from allowing tourism activities on their land.

The LCCF is primarily funded by guests staying at Leleshwa Camp. Since 2007, as part of the Community Conservation Fee, every guest has made a direct contribution of $6 per night. The Fund has created 20 new boarding scholarships for 13 girls and 7 boys until the end of their Primary Education.

For guests interested in setting up further scholarships for students, we recommend a Boarding Scholarship at Mpopongi Primary School to continue LCCF’s objective of ensuring that all areas of Siana benefit from the fund. Alternatively, as LCCF currently only supports children through their primary education, guests can set up a Secondary School Scholarships to assist the best achieving students through their ongoing education. LCCF can disburse the scholarship funds directly to the school, monitor the child’s performance and ensure that the sponsors receive regular updates on their child’s progress.

The LCCF is actively involved with the school and provides the following ongoing support:
Stationary -Leleshwa Camp has pre-packed Stationary Sets available for sale to guests at $10 each which they can present when visiting the school. These consist of the basic stationery required for a student for a year.
Teacher Funding -Mpopongi Primary School currently has 6 teachers provided by the Government and 3 teachers paid for by the parents. LCCF has employed a 4th community teacher, Ambrose Kipkoech, who started on 1st October 2009.
Term Prizes -The Fund provides prizes for the Best Performing Boy & Girl and The Most Improved Boy & Girl in each class. These are presented at a Prize Day Ceremony at the end of each term.
Sports Day -The Fund sponsors a school sports day each year. Children of all ages compete in traditional events, such as running races and javelin as well as fun events such as sack and egg & spoon races.
Conservation Days -Leleshwa Camp hosts Conservation Days, where classes are taken on excursions by our guides and given conservation lessons and the opportunity to experience their area from the perspective of tourists.
Teacher Support - LCCF hosts a barbeque evening each term in order to motivate and create team building amongst the teachers of Mpopongi School.

We are committed to supporting our school along with the Maywood Rotary Club and welcome all contributions towards the school. Please click here to learn more about how you can assist us with supporting our community.
